Four Fun Reads for St. Patrick’s Day: Our Picture Book Picks

March 8, 2020

We are a little bit Irish, but even if you aren’t, it’s still so fun to learn about the symbols and traditions that come with St. Patrick’s Day. Here are four quick stories that will help to get you in the festive spirit.

How to Trap a Leprechaun – Sue Fliess

Did you know if you catch a leprechaun they’ll grant you a wish? The only challenge is, it’s very difficult to trap one! This rhyming book offers amazing inspiration to make your very own leprechaun trap. The end of the story also shares a wonderful, simple explanation of the leprechaun folklore.

Mr. Mischief and the Leprechaun – originated by Roger Hargreaves

Mr. Mischief thinks he is the king of trouble. But after a day of misbehaving with the leprechaun, he realizes that leprechauns can’t be trusted because they are the trickiest of all!

St. Patrick’s Day – Anne Rockwell

This picture book lets us take a look at all the ways the children are learning about St. Patrick’s Day at school: writing reports, dancing to Irish music and acting out plays. Not everyone is Irish, but sharing traditions of shamrocks and soda bread brings friends together.

Pete the Cat: The Great Leprechaun Chase – James Dean

It’s almost St. Patrick’s Day when Pete decides that he will start a leprechaun catching business. All of Pete’s friends are interested in getting some extra luck, but they learn the sweetest lesson: they are already the luckiest of all because they have each other!

If you like the printable Irish blessing quote we have framed on our shelf, feel free to download it here. Print it off on 8.5 x 11 inch paper and trim to fit into an 8 x 10 inch frame.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
